You may know it simply as “BOTOX®,” but botulinum toxin therapy has uses that go beyond cosmetic treatment.

At Capital Dental, we offer therapeutic botulinum toxin treatment using Xeomin®, a prescription injectable in the same family of medications as BOTOX®. For some patients, it may help manage symptoms associated with jaw muscle tension, clenching and grinding, TMJ-related discomfort and certain types of facial muscle pain.

Xeomin® works by temporarily reducing activity in the muscles where it is injected. If overactive jaw muscles are contributing to your discomfort, our dentists can evaluate your symptoms and discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you. Jaw pain can have several causes, so an evaluation is an important first step.

BOTOX® vs. Xeomin®: What Is the Difference?

“BOTOX” is often used as a general term for botulinum toxin injections, but BOTOX® and Xeomin® are different prescription products. Our office uses Xeomin®. Both belong to the same family of medications, but they are not interchangeable products.

If you have been searching for “Botox for TMJ,” “Botox for jaw pain” or “Botox for clenching and grinding,” therapeutic treatment with Xeomin® may be what you are looking for. Xeomin® is FDA approved for several conditions, but its use for TMJ-related symptoms, jaw pain and bruxism is not FDA approved. Your provider can explain what that means as part of your treatment discussion.

A Treatment Plan Based on Your Symptoms

Clenching, grinding and jaw discomfort do not affect everyone in the same way. You might notice tightness in your cheeks, soreness after waking or fatigue when chewing. During your visit, our team will ask about your symptoms, examine your jaw and discuss any care you have already tried.

If muscle activity appears to be part of the problem, Xeomin® may be one option to consider. Its effects are temporary, and results vary. We will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and risks with you before you decide whether to proceed.

We invite you to call us at 301-654-1777 to schedule your next consultation with our dentists, Dr. John Conaghan and associates, to discuss your options for Therapeutic Botulinum Toxin Treatment in Bethesda, MD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Xeomin® stop me from grinding my teeth?

Xeomin® may reduce activity in selected jaw muscles, but it does not necessarily stop grinding or address every cause of it. Our team can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Will this treatment help every type of TMJ pain?

No. Jaw pain can involve muscles, the jaw joints or other causes. An evaluation helps us determine whether treatment aimed at the muscles makes sense for your symptoms.

How long do the effects last?

The effects of botulinum toxin treatment are temporary. How long you notice a change can vary, and our team can discuss what to expect based on your treatment plan.

Are there risks I should know about?

Yes. Like other botulinum toxin products, Xeomin® can cause side effects. Rarely, its effects can spread beyond the injection area and cause serious swallowing or breathing problems. Tell your provider about your health conditions and medications so you can review the risks together.

How do I find out if I am a candidate?

Ask our team about an evaluation. We will listen to what you have been experiencing, examine your jaw and help you understand your treatment options.
